I’m going through Changes

I’ve been listening a lot to Eminem’s latest album Recovery, and I’m struck by how well he can describe the dark times he has been through. It may not be the happiest album to listen to, but I definitely think it’s one of his most powerful.

If anything it refreshing to hear someone talk about depression in a frank open way. Sometimes when going through a crap time it feel like you’re the only person going through such a thing. It feels good to know that it’s not just you. That you’re not going crazy, and that such dark times do actually exist. Even the picture above (which is the album cover from his last album Relapse) emphasises the difficult times Eminem went through- his face is made out of prescription pills- highlighting his addiction but also the over-reliance of society on pills to ‘fix’ things.

One song which I’ve had on repeat is Changes which samples Ozzy Osbourne. There’s few words that can actually sum up the power and depth of his lyrics.

Below is a sample of one of the verses, and its interesting to see that Eminem has a body image problem, and at the time hated the way he looks. It’s one of the few examples of a male celebrity talking about the pressure to look good, and how he doesn’t always feel like the tough muscle man everyone has him made out to be.

why do I act like I’m all high and mighty,
When inside, I’m dying, I am finally realizing I need help.
I can’t do it by myself, too weak, 2 weeks I’ve been having ups and downs,
Going through peaks and valleys, dilly dallying,
Around with the idea, of ending the shit right here.
I’m hatin’ my reflection, I walk around the house tryin’ to fight mirrors,
I can’t stand what I look like, yeah, I look fat, but what do I care?

The Mental Health Hotline- Thoughts?

I’ve heard this before and I have to admit that it made me laugh. It got me thinking… (Yes, it does happen occasionally)

Are jokes like this contributing to the stigma associated with mental illness, or are they harmless. Did you laugh or were you offended?

I would love to read some of your opinions on this

Love the Way you Lie- Video

Have had this song on repeat for the past month-LOVE it. For any of you who havn’t seen the video yet.

It’s great- and really shows the emotion of the lyrics- and the dynamics of that love-hate relationships so many couples have.
